RELIGIONS IN THE UNIVERSE
UNITY IN DIVERSITY
I am a former nuclear physicist who had his education at Harvard
as a scientist.
I write this article with infinite love and respect for people of
all faiths in the world, and indeed my love and respect for
all the religions of the world.
If religion can bring the people of the world together and thread
them in a garland of love then it is one of the most wonderful
things that ever came upon earth.
If by religion people simply mean that all have one father and all
are his children, and in this thought alone all religious
differences can cease to exist, then it can make a heaven on
earth.
If only we can understand that there is just ONE Creator
and that God in His Infinite Wisdom reached out everywhere to make
His presence felt before the diverse people of the world with
different languages, different cultures, different colors and
countries, then we shall indeed be able to live together in peace.
This world will become like a beautiful garden with different
religions as flowers of different colors existing side by side.
If we study the lives of the various founders of the faiths, we
find that they were the gentlest, kindest, most loving, most
sacrificing beings that ever came on the planet earth.
We must not forget that every religion has a history of hundreds
and thousands of years behind it, with its own culture and
civilization. And we must give every religion the due respect that
it deserves.
With the advent of science and the inter-connection of the world
and greater civilization, countries have evolved democratic
governments with political constitutions where they respect people
of all faiths, and you see their places of worship existing side
by side.
There is now a greater understanding amongst the peoples of the
world that they have no alternative but to live together, and
accept each other's race, religion, color and nationality.
A Hindu has as much right to believe in Lord Krishna as has a
Christian to believe in Lord Christ, or a Buddhist in Lord Buddha,
or a Muslim in Prophet Mohamed or a Zorastrian in Lord Zoraster,
or the Jews in Jehovah etc.
We love our family and our home as much as our neighbour loves his
family and his home. We will not ask our neighbour to give up his
family and to adopt ours. Let each person follow his path and do
you follow yours. We must love people of all faiths, we must love even
atheists.
The scientific concept of God has further brought home to people
that they must give up bigotry and strive for something higher,
more intellectual, more logical.
God is infinite, therefore His knowledge is infinite, His creation
is infinite, and His knowledge is seen exhibited in the vastness
of the universe around us.
It may come about that the youth of tomorrow may begin to turn
more and more towards science and tolerance of each other's
beliefs.
Science has postulated that the time will come when life will
be discovered on billions of planets existing in the Universe.
It is logical to assume that these billions of planets may have
billions of religions of their own. Our planet has about ten major
religions.
One day we will all have to come to the inevitable conclusion that
the Infinite God has devised an infinite number of ways to reach
Him all over the Universe. And that we will have no alternative
but to respect each other's faiths.
The greatest scientist of all times, Albert Einstein had this to
say about the Supreme Intelligence he saw working in the Universe:
"The most beautiful and most profound emotion we can experience is
the sensation of the mystical. It is the power of all true
science. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists,
manifesting itself as the Highest Wisdom and the Most Radiant
Beauty which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most
primitive Forms–this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of
true religiousness."
In ending I quote this article on the note of optimism that my
father envisioned for the world in the days ahead:
"Even as every night must give place to day and every autumn turn
to spring so it is the voice of my heart that the time is drawing
close when One God shall exist for all, and all shall be His
children, Love shall be His worship and the hearts of men shall
know a never ending peace."
